Protect & Serve

This painting is dedicated to my father who was a police officer in upstate New York from 1958 through 1961.

My father, Richard William Hahlbohm, was a cop in a rural town which he served proudly for four years before being dismissed. He did not lose his job because of lack of duty, but because he regarded his integrity and commitment above all else.

In that small town there was a mayor of the town who repeatedly would drive home late at night drunk. My father gave the mayor a number of warnings, then finally told the mayor if he caught him driving drunk again, endangering other drivers on the road, he would give him a ticket. The mayor laughed and told my father if he did, his badge would be on the mayors desk by morning.

The next night the mayor drove home drunk as usual, my father gave him a ticket, and sure enough... my father was fired the very next day.

My father never regretted giving that ticket. He vowed to protect and serve the community when he took the badge and that is exactly what he did, even to the extent of ending his career. For those four years he served, he was the most respected police officer in that area, and still is. You cannot put a price on integrity and values, all else is, and need be, secondary at best.
